Know what you're removing
Three categories of pathogen matter. Protozoa — giardia and cryptosporidium — are large and are the main risk in North American backcountry; every filter handles them. Bacteria like E. coli and salmonella are smaller but still caught by any filter rated to 0.2 microns.
Viruses are the exception. They're far too small for a standard hollow-fiber filter and require chemical treatment, UV, boiling, or a dedicated purifier.
