Ask a hundred campers why they were cold and ninety will blame their sleeping bag. The real culprit is usually beneath them. Body weight crushes the insulation under your back flat, so the ground — which conducts heat roughly twenty times faster than still air — draws warmth straight out of you all night.
A sleeping pad solves two problems at once: it insulates you from the ground and it makes hard surfaces sleepable. Getting it right is cheaper and more effective than upgrading almost anything else in your kit.
Understand R-value
